Perl prototype server
Hi,
Back in February, I was working on a new MUD server for use in web browsers. I wrote it in Perl, it supports "reverse AJAX" requests (asynchronous messages from the server to the client), multiple connections, basic movement commands, a mini-map, etc. This is still just a prototype however, so there is very little real security (against denial-of-service attacks, etc.) and no account/character system, very few commands (movement + say). I'm currently toying with the idea of implementing all this properly in C++, but it seems like a monumental task at the moment (especially given the lack of time). In the meantime, I've addded a screenshot to be adored. I'll post any updates to this thread. Vegard Edit: Looks like the screenshot didn't really work, so I've uploaded it somewhere else:

RE: Perl prototype server
Looks interesting. Is this available for public viewing or is it only local?

I didn't test browser compatibility very well -- the client uses jQuery so it should be reasonably compatible, but there were also some cases where it didn't work. Firefox and conkeror should both be fine. Enter anything as username, password can be blank. The areas are from Project Legilimensia (Harry Potter MUD) and are available under a Creative Commons license. |

RE: Perl prototype server
Wow... that is very nice. I love the smooth map scrolling and use of the background
A single suggestions: - On your map window, it would be really cool if I could click on it to indicate the direction I wanted to go. Clicking outside the circle would indicate north, east, south, west (and the combinations of those). Clicking inside the circle could be Up/Down. I think it would really enhance the map. |
